McIan's major undertaking of illustrating the clans and costume of Scottish Highlanders was first commissioned by the Highland Society of London in 1845. The effort was financed solely by private subscription and was shortly thereafter enhanced through the addition of essays regarding each clan depicted which briefly covered its history, armorial bearings and dress.

In its mode of depiction, McIan's prints are undeniably the most picturesque and telling with respect to the clans and their various costuming. The sketches range in their representations and depict a great variety of armory and dress, from ancient forms of the belted plaid and "leiun-croich" to the distinguished robe of gentlemen.

Beautiful to behold, and of great historical importance, McIan's representations are a wonderful addition to any collector's gallery or family's historical background.

Most libraries carry modern reproductions of the original in which the reader may view all of these prints and essays firsthand. Check your local library system today for "R.R. McIan - The Clans of the Scottish Highlands."
