David Roberts was 42 when he set off on his journey through the Holy Lands. Leaving London in August of 1838, Roberts traveled through France to Marseilles, then sailed via Malta and Greece to Alexandria. With the help of the British consul Roberts then hired a boat, its eight-man crew, a reis, and a servant and traveled to Cairo, spending a day or two seeing the pyramids and the Sphinx . The material collected by Roberts during these travels would serve him for many years to come. The main result - these lithographed scenes contained in the six volume set for which he is best known. These volumes have been described as "the most ambitious work ever published in England with lithographed plates." Although we show only a small number of these prints in our online gallery, we have many many more in stock. Please feel free to inquire. Email us at: info@antiqueart.net |
